Gorillaz have been pipped to the post by Boyzone in a closely fought battle for Britain’s number one album.
Gorillaz are a pop phenomenon. Reaching a demographic even Blur couldn’t tap into, the cartoon pop group have released two studio albums, topping charts around the world with their addictive material.
Returning with ‘Plastic Beach’ the group whetted appetites with a series of online teasers. Typically lavish cartoons, they showed Gorillaz hard at work on their secret base somewhere in the South Pacific.
Joined by the likes of Mark E Smith, Bobby Womack and more Gorillaz have received rave reviews for their long awaited third album. ‘Plastic Beach’ was released last week, and immediately sold well.
In a new move the Official Chart Company released the mid-week run down, which showed Gorillaz at number one. Outselling nearest rivals Boyzone, the cartoon popsters were predicted to be headed for the top spot.
However in a last gasp burst Irish crooners Boyzone have come from behind to claim pole position with their new album ‘Brother’. The band’s first since the tragic death of Stephen Gately the album has topped the British charts.
Other new entries this week include Scottish singer Amy MacDonald, with her album ‘A Curious Thing’. Meanwhile fellow Scot Paolo Nutini is at number seven with his acclaimed album ‘Sunny Side Up’.
Much hyped newcomer Ellie Goulding, however, has slid out of the Top Ten after only one week- her album ‘Lights’ has fallen to number sixteen.
The UK Top Ten Albums are as follows:
