ClashMusic has spoken exclusively to Goldfrapp about their love of disco producer Giorgio Moroder.
As hard as it might be to comprehend, there was a time when machine were viewed as suspicious by the music industry. Disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder helped to turn this opinion on its head, via a stunning series of singles with artists such as Sparks and Donna Summer.
British electro poppers Goldfrapp are returning with their new album ‘Head First’ which was apparently inspired by an obscure Moroder work.
Speaking exclusively to ClashMusic, Alison Goldfrapp revealed that she was inspired by ‘Cat People’ – a long lost film soundtracked by the disco producer.
“We’re both really into films, they constantly inspire us,” says Alison Goldfrapp. “‘Cat People’ – the Moroder not Bowie version – kept cropping up as we were making the album. I would love to do the music for a horror film actually.”
Continuing, the singer claimed Roman Polanski and the James Bond franchise were also influential in the Goldfrapp world.
“We get ideas from all sorts of things,” the singer explained. “Old books I’ve seen that I like to collect, films and fashion but not really fashion in the straight down the line sense. I guess it’s more like things I see in books on national costume or from old magazines.”
Goldfrapp have been working on new album ‘Head First’ for some time. The follow up to 2008’s ‘Seventh Tree’ the group produced the material themselves, but admitted that in the future a collaborator could take control of the mixing desk.
“If the timing was right then I think we’d definitely be interested in the idea of it – but not so much producing, more writing, as we like our sound for ourselves,” Will Gregory revealed.
