Gold Panda has taken charge of the next instalment in the DJ-Kicks series, due for release on October 31st.
Gold Panda never expected to become successful. An intensely shy young producer, the Peckham based beatsmith mixed bass textures with electronics on his debut album ‘Lucky Shiner’ last year.
Matching an inventive approach to some deft samples, Gold Panda was thrust into the public gaze. Initially struggling to cope with the attention, the producer has rapidly gained in confidence with his live show coming on leaps and bounds.
Set to take charge of the latest mix from DJ-Kicks, Gold Panda follows in the steps of everyone from Carl Craig to Kode9. Preparing a new mix, the producer admitted that he struggled to make the transition to become a DJ.
“I’d never consider myself a DJ, but through doing this I’ve really become more appreciative of it. I’ve so much more respect for people that do DJ now” he said.
Constructing a 22 track mix, Gold Panda includes plenty of cutting edge bass frequencies. One of the producers cited as an influence of Untold, whose rhythmic touches flutter through two cuts on the mix.
“LV & Untold’s ‘Beacon,’ for instance, has all these little intricacies that makes it so interesting – (dubstep producer) Untold just seems to be a master at finding and building these lovely percussion sounds.”
Far from a bass showcase, the upcoming mix has plenty of driving house and techno cuts alongside the odd curveball. “‘Puerto Rican Girls’ by Melchior & Prosanto has one of the loveliest hand claps ever, and then there’s ‘Maria’ by Closer Musik which has been a complete favourite of mine for a number of years.”
Arranging a number of live dates to go alongside the new mix, Gold Panda is set to release his ‘DJ-Kicks’ compilation on October 31st. Tracklisting below, dates after the jump:
