GoGo Penguin’s ‘Friday Film Special’ Is An Instrumental Hip-Hop Homage

With shades of 'Endtroducing'...

GoGo Penguin are at their cinematic best on new song ‘Friday Film Special’.

The aptly-titled new release comes ahead of their incoming album, which GoGo Penguin teased with a handful of UK shows over winter. The Manchester instrumental group absorb fresh influences on ‘Everything Is Going To Be OK’, a sign of the lasting chemistry that propels them forwards.

GoGo Penguin ease into a fresh sphere on this new track, one that points to the lingering influence of instrumental hip-hop. The band were fans of hip-hop production, in particular the dense, layered sample-delic approach DJ Shadow.

There’s a slice of ‘Endtroducing’ on this new song, with its brooding energy recalling DJ Shadow’s seminal work. GoGo Penguin comment…

“Chris and I have been big fans of hip-hop and instrumental hip-hop albums for many years and it’s something that we haven’t had much chance to explore before with GoGo Penguin. Albums such as DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing were a huge influence on us when we were young and ‘Friday Film Special’ really tips its cap to the hip-hop instrumentals that we’d grown up loving.

Friday Film Specials were a series of films made by the Children’s Film Foundation and were on TV every Friday in the mid to late 80s… It’s one of the most retro and nostalgic things I could think of.

Tune in now.
