You may have read in your papers recently that the powers that be in Ibiza are hoping to rid the isle of its image as Europe’s foremost dance-vacation destination.
Actually anyone who’s been there over the last few years will know that the club owners are gradually doing the same, although it’s the ‘dance’ bit they’re increasingly doing away with, not the late-night frolics.
Indie is now a major part of the Ibizan experience. A plethora of top-flight bands and DJs are now flocking to the white isle every summer, and while the full live shebang can be found over at Manumissions’ high-profile Ibiza Rocks, a more intriguing affair is waiting to be discovered at Es Paradis, where Rizla’s Rogue DJs rock the joint every week from mid-June to late August.
Rogue is an indie night with a difference. First up, some of the biggest names in indie rock are pitching up with their previously undiscovered record bags. Previous years have seen the likes of Kasabian, Babyshambles, Snow Patrol, The Subways, The Mystery Jets, Belle And Sebastian and Arctic Monkeys try their hands at playing out there, and some high-profile names are present and correct in ’08 too.
The Horrors, The Maccabees and Hard Fi’s infamous DJ Wrongtom are three of the newer names already announced, and they’ll join returning favourites Babyshambles, Snow Patrol and a wealth of more eclectic names behind the decks. Rogue DJs is very aptly named, in fact, as the line-up on any given Wednesday is likely to be both as brilliant and as bonkers as you’ve ever seen.
MP’s son Eddie Temple-Morris is the man hosting the show every week. He’s best known for his Friday night Remix show on XFM, during which he pushes indie to its very limits with re-rubs from all sorts of headfuck techno and electro acts, and the Ibiza bash follows a similar blueprint, with the likes of MSTRKRFT, Utah Saints, Autokratz and the Prodigy’s Leeroy Thornhill also booked.
Perhaps most interesting of all, though, set to appear several times over the summer is The Mighty Boosh’s short-arsed freelance shaman Naboo, a2a Noel Fielding’s brother Michael. Lord only knows what’s going to go down during those sets – or, indeed, during most of the others, which is the true beauty of the Rogue DJs. It may be sponsored by the good people at Rizla but there’s none of your chill-out malarkey here. Anything could happen over the next ten weeks, and probably will.
We’ve got a whole heap of tickets to give away, both regular and VIP versions, so pop along here to enter.
