GLOK and Timothy Clerkin align on new album ‘Alliance’.
GLOK is the electronic alter ego of Ride’s Andy Bell, and the English musician has built a production catalogue of subtle adventure. Introduced by mutual friends, Timothy Clerkin took part in Andy’s ‘Dissident Remixed’ album, which came out in 2019.
Crossing paths at Andrew Weatherall’s funeral, the pair kept in touch, eventually swapping ideas over email. New album ‘Alliance’ is the end result – out on November 8th via Bytes, it’s an entirely collaborative effort.
“We didn’t discuss much in the way of direction,” says Andy. “I was having quite a creative spell at the time, to me it felt like making music was keeping me sane but when I think back, it was actually making me more insane, just in a different way.”
The album was largely constructed over the pandemic, and the roles were split 50/50. “It was all done remotely,” Tim continues, “firing ideas back and forth between 2020 and 2021 while I was in Amsterdam and Andy in London. I think people will probably think that I did the synths and Andy did the guitars, but we actually played a pretty equal amount of both! That’s one of the reasons I love it, it’s a proper collaboration, where we both tried new things and nothing was off limits.”
With Andy Bell’s GLOK outbursts placed into what he terms “the Clerkin blender”, the results will be out shortly.
Dazzling new single ‘Empyrean’ is out now – woozy, psychedelic synths, it comes with an eye-opening video.
