Scottish gloom rockers Glasvegas are due to kick off their latest United States tour with a show in a Las Vegas wedding chapel.
Glasvegas have been well known in Glasgow for some time. The band were originally a scratchy punk band, before giving in to their love of Americana and raw rhythm and blues. Donning their leathers, the band recruited a new drummer from renowned Mod hangout Friday Street.
Early singles such as ‘Go Square Go’ were funded by the band themselves, as their hometown shows found the band revelling in a near spiritual atmosphere. Declared the best new band on the planet by none other than Creation records founder Alan McGee, Glasvegas were quickly snapped up by V2.
Their self-titled debut album dropped last summer and was immediately acclaimed by critics as a ready made classic. Glasvegas seemed to embody everything great about rock ‘n’ roll, and represented a sensational proposition as the festival season opened.
A performance at T In The Park saw fans swamp the tent, with the festival acting as a springboard to the group’s success.
Yet in a recent interview Glasvegas admitted that they were unprepared to play such massive shows, with the band claiming they were now on the live form of their career.
The forthcoming show will see the band put this to the test with Glasvegas’ first show in the city that gave them their name.
“Las Vegas has always seemed like another planet to us,” frontman James Allan said in a statement. “Weird, unreachable and glamorous. Our love for the late, great Elvis Presley and his infamous Las Vegas shows is the best inspiration we could wish for.”
The show will take place in the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel. Hosted by MySpace, the social networking site recently organised secret shows for the likes of Green Day, who unveiled their recent album ’21st Century Breakdown’ in New York.
Glasvegas are planning a busy summer of dates in the United States, with dates in Reno, San Francisco and more. The Scottish rockers are due to perform at Chicago’s Lollapalooza alongside headliners such as Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and more.
Glasvegas will perform in Las Vegas’ Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel today (June 3rd).
