Scots rockers Glasvegas has been rocked by the news that drummer Caroline McKay has left.
An underground sensation in their native Scotland, Glasvegas conquered the nation with their debut album. Nominated for the Mercury music prize, it’s mixture of Spector style pop and fuzzed up guitars bowled over fans with its style and aggression.
Since then, however, all things Glasvegas have been a little chaotic. Singer James Allan went missing last year, missing out on the Mercury ceremony.
Later discovered in New York, the band’s attempts to record their second album have been dealt a blow after drummer Caroline McKay revealed that she was leaving Glasvegas.
A stand up drummer in the mould of Mo Tucker, McKay’s retro charm was honed during her years working at Glasgow’s 60s inspired clubs. A former door woman at Mod hang out Friday Street, her leather clad appearance peered out over the grinding noise supplied by the Allan brothers.
However the drummer has now decided to depart the band. The decision is said to be amicable, although Glasvegas are “really sad” about her departure.
“We are really sad that Caroline has decided to leave as she is one of the coolest drummers around,” James Allan said. “But we respect her decision and say goodbye with all our love and luck”.
Meanwhile, Glasvegas have travelled to Los Angeles to write their second album. The band’s first new material since their special Christmas release in 2008, they are expected to enter the recording studio soon.
