Geoff Travis is set to receive the AIM Pioneer Award at this year's AIM Awards.
Rough Trade need little introduction. Part of the first wave of punk independents who helped under cut the majors, the label released material from the likes of Young Marble Giants, The Clean, The Smiths and more as it built up a unique, extremely English identity – one which sustains in its second spell.
However Geoff Travis might. The quiet, patient figure behind Rough Trade, the record shop owner turned label boss and management figure has been a steady, guiding hand for independence across the decades.
In light of his achievements, the AIM Awards plan to honour the Rough Trade founder this summer. As a result, Geoff Travis will become the latest recipient of the AIM Pioneer Award at this year's AIM Awards.
Geoff Travis was clearly delighted with the news. "There is not much that betters having respect from your peers… So thank you AIM!"
Meanwhile, Alison Wenham, Chairman of AIM said: "Geoff is an icon not just amongst independents but across the whole industry. He shows the way, he inspires, he is and always has been true to his beliefs. We salute you Geoff, from your friends at AIM."
The AIM Independent Music Awards 2013, return to The Brewery in Clerkenwell on September 3rd.
