Seminal rap duo Gangstarr could be set to release more material, despite the death of MC Guru.
Gangstarr were an anomaly. The band refused to pander to trends, working on their own style. DJ Premier collected a vast array of jazz and funk cuts, which formed the basis of their mosaic like sound.
Over the top of this, MC Guru’s flow was impeccable pushing rap in new directions. Splitting in the mid 90s, the duo’s reputation remained undiminished leading to a widespread outpouring of grief on the news of Guru’s death earlier this year.
Passing away following a lengthy battle, Guru left behind him a formidable legacy. This could be sustained, with DJ Premier revealing in a recent interview that he was working on ‘new’ Gangstarr material.
Speaking to XXL Magazine, the producer claimed that he had collected unheard Guru verses from around the world. “There are guys in Europe who say that they have seven or eight … It’s songs he did with them and they never finished it and they said I can have them. They reached out and were like, As long as you’re doing it. You can have the vocals” he explained.
“They are all brand new, from like a year and a half ago. I listened to them and I’ll make them shits sound like we were together. Well, we will be together because spiritually, he’s with me for the rest of my life.”
Meanwhile, DJ Premier is collecting live footage for a potential DVD which could be released next year. “I’m putting together a Gang Starr DVD because I’ve been filming since 1989,” he continued. “I did all the filming until 1993. Then I started bringing guys with me. I have hundreds and hundreds of tapes of me and Guru arguing in the airport.”
“Him and Shug fighting. Guru tried fighting everyone. Now, you look at it and it’s like, Damn, I miss that.”
