"I'd got myself so amped up, nervous and psyched out about it..."
Frank Turner on Mastermind

Frank Turner has spoken about his victory on Celebrity Mastermind.

Mastermind is renowned for its difficulty, for the psychological trauma a spell in that little black chair can inflict. So when celebrities get involved, the results can be fairly entertaining.

Frank Turner, though, wasn't about to be outdone. A contestant on Celebrity Mastermind earlier this year, the folk-punk songwriter was joined by John Cooper Clarke, actor Ben Faulks and comedian Roy Hudd.

Choosing Iron Maiden as his specialist subject, Frank Turner was aiming to raise money for Shelter. Languishing in third place as the second (and final) round approached, the singer picked himself up and raced out in front.

"On the show, at the end of the first round, I was actually coming third and I was sitting there thinking, 'fuck this, I am not going to lose this'. So I got quite, sort of, aggressive about it, in my head," he told Kerrang. "I seemed more bothered about it than any of the other contestants on the show. They were all a bit more like, 'have fun with it'. So I was probably more at a disadvantage because I'd got myself so amped up, nervous and psyched out about it and they were all like, 'whatever'."

Winning the competition, Frank Turner was able to realise a long held dream. "Basically I was a massive nerd when I was a kid" he said. "With that in mind, Mastermind was always on my to do list - or rather, my fantasy to do list. It was funny because the first band I ever fell in love with was Maiden and I always said they'd be my specialist subject."
