Former Smith Turns Lecturer

Johnny Marr Gets Educational

Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr is set to give a very special lecture at Salford University on November 4th, it has been reported.

The famed guitar player will deliver a lecture titled ‘Always On The Outside: Mavericks, Innovators and Building Your Own Ark’. Marr’s last appearance at Salford University was with The Smiths – the band played one of their last ever gigs there in 1986.

Marr has kept himself busy recently, notably playing with both The Cribs and American alt rock dons Modest Mouse. As well as this the guitarist has assisted in the compiling of the new Smiths retrospective and played in the Africa Exprez concert at the BBC Electric Proms.

It is reported that the lecture will be open to the public. John Sweeney of Salford University’s School of Media, Music and Performance described Marr as “the most influential guitarist of the last 25 years”.

He added: “His lecture is a tremendous opportunity for our students and the wider public to benefit from his considerable experience and expertise. It promises to be a really special event.”
