Foals Talk Studio Hell

Not that bad, they claim

Oxford math rock titans Foals have spoken about the much discussed sessions which lie behind their new album.

Funny how one little remark can change the way something is perceived. Interviewed recently Foals keyboard player Edwin Congreave claimed that recording their second album was “the worst thing in the world.”

Cue acres of press reports about the ‘troubled’ second album, with poor old Foals being locked away in Sweden against their own wishes. Speaking to BBC 6Music, singer Yannis Philippakis poured cold water on the reports.

The frontman argued that the remarks were taken out of context, and even quoted Dickens to get his point across. “It was the worst time, and also the best time.” Philippakis explained, “I think he was just trying to explain the peaks and troughs of the recording experience.”

“It was just quite intense, there wasn’t a lot of release from it” he explained of the band’s Swedish sojourn.

“So for Edwin particularly it was probably the worst and best. I actually enjoyed being in the studio a lot! It’s not like its being made out to be. It wasn’t quite that bad!”

Foals new album ‘Total Life Forever’ is out now, with the record winning favour with fans. The group have ironed out some of the creases from their debut effort, but a sense of internal drama remains.

“We’re all quite strong-willed, but any tension or conflict that’s caused or comes about through the clash of personalities, in our band it’s always led to good things” the singer revealed.

“That’s how the music is made. That’s how we operate and I think it’ll always be like that.”
