Flying Lotus has revealed that he is working on a new jazz album.
Flying Lotus has always admitted his debt to jazz. Real name Steve Ellison, the producer's aunt was harp great Alice Coltrane while the musician spent his teenage years learning the saxophone.
Incorporating elements of improvisation into his set, Flying Lotus is now seemingly ready to indulge his jazz fetish. Speaking to Brightest Young Things (via Pitchfork) the producer promised to deliver a "crazy jazz album".
"Right now, I’m on my jazz shit, man. I’m doing a lot of jazz stuff. We’re trying to make something that’s kind of a geek album. There are crazy time signatures and really intense playing, just because we want to go there. We want to play really fast. It’s gonna be fun, man… At the moment, there’s a lot of people involved."
One of those guest musicians could well be jazz icon Herbie Hancock, who was pictured in the studio with Flying Lotus recently. Probed about a potential collaboration, Ellison admitted that the two had been working together.
Elsewhere, Flying Lotus has dropped a joint cut with Mac Miller. 'S.B.S.' is all slumped beats, crazy organs and that loose limbed J Dilla feel, while Mac's verses are as smooth as always.
