Florence Welch On Second Album

Science influences new material

BRIT Award winning group Florence And The Machine have revealed a new interest in science.

As the old music industry adage goes, you’ve got 20 years to work on your debut album and then six months to cough up a sequel.

Having spent some time honing her skills, Florence Welch released her debut album last year. ‘Lungs’ went on to become an enormous success, and still rests in the official UK Top Ten almost a full year after its release.

Scooping a Mercury nomination and a couple of BRIT Awards, Florence And The Machine have now settled down to work on their second album. Speaking to NME, Florence Welch revealed that she has been influenced by science on her new material.

Working with producer Paul Epworth, new track ‘Strangeness And Charm’ is apparently inspired by studying the components of atomic particles.

“I was having a conversation with my father and he was talking about this thing – strangeness and charm,” Welch explained.

“It’s actually the name of the two smallest particles that there are when you split the atom, so I wrote a song around it. I even managed to fit the word ‘hydrogen’ in there. Isn’t that a nice thing for scientists to call them though? – it’s so unscientific and human.”

Continuing, Florence Welch insisted that she still has plenty of musical ground left to explore. “The second album feels like a release – I’ve got new ground to cover – whereas the first one was really scary” she stated.

“The next year is really just me moving on and creating something new. It’s like, you get given a clean slate to do whatever you want, so what isn’t there to like about that?”
