Florence & The Machine Retain Top Spot

Despite some tough competition...

Florence & The Machine have retained number one slot on the singles chart with new release ‘Spectrum’.

Somewhat bizarrely, Florence & The Machine had never claimed a number one single until last week. Given a remix by Calvin Harris ‘Spectrum’ flew into the charts, notching up the group’s first pole position in the process.

Despite some fierce competition, Florence & The Machine have managed to retain the top spot. ‘Spectrum’ lagged behind in the mid-week countdown, but a late surge saw the group push their way back to number one.

Over on the albums chart, Elton John reigned supreme. ‘Good Morning To The Night’ is a collaborative effort, with Australian duo Pnau re-working some of the songwriter’s best known singles.

Focussing on his 1970-1976 commercial peak, the album entered the charts at number one. However it’s less than impressive sales – just over 14,000 in one week – mean that it is the least successful number one album of the 21st century. (via Official Chart Company)

Elsewhere, Frank Ocean has dropped to number three with ‘Channel Orange’ retaining a strong chart presence. Paul Simon hits number four with ‘Graceland’ while Ed Sheeran is at number five with ever present release ‘+’.

The current UK Top Ten albums are:

1. ‘Good Morning To The Night’ – Elton John vs Pnau
2. ‘Overexposed’ – Maroon 5
3. ‘Channel Orange’ – Frank Ocean
4. ‘Graceland’ – Paul Simon
5. ‘+’ – Ed Sheeran
6. ‘Talk That Talk’ – Rihanna
7. ’21’ – Adele
8. ‘Life Is Good’ – Nas
9. ‘California 37’ – Train
10. ‘Our Version Of Events’ – Emili Sande
