Florence & The Machine are set to release their new track ‘Breath of Life’ tomorrow (April 28th).
‘Ceremonials’ saw Florence Welch transformed into a global star. Making serious inroads into the United States, the epic stage show of Florence & The Machine pounded North American audiences.
Hugely successful, ‘Ceremonials’ will – in a commercial sense, at least – take some topping. Yet instead of resting on her laurels, Florence Welch has headed straight back into the studio to work on new material.
‘Breath of Life’ is an entirely new track, with the song set to be used over the closing credits of Universal Pictures’ ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’. Recorded at Abbey Road, Florence & The Machine were joined by a 110 piece orchestra.
Co-written by Florence Welch and Isabella Summers, the song was crafted from the perspective of the film’s Queen Ravenna and deals with the pursuit of everlasting youth and beauty.
Chatting with MTV News recently, Florence Welch said: “The Queen is just this incredible character; so hungry for life but so dead inside. She’s sort of eternal, but inside there’s nothing. She’s kind of like charcoal or something. She has this thirst for youth and for life, but for what kind of life? This darkness, but she’s so beautiful, so it’s this kind of juxtaposition between beauty and, ultimately, death.”
Continuing, Florence Welch explained that the recording process was an emotional experience. “You feel in a bit of a way like you’re kind of making it up as you go along, and then when you see it done, laid out before you in such a beautiful, orchestral fashion, it’s really incredible… I love choirs and I love choral music, and there was a 60-piece choir singing the vocal parts that I had written. When the baritones came in, I nearly wept, it was so emotional.”
‘Breath of Life’ will be released on April 28th.
