Flaming Lips Win Song Contest

Band craft new Oklahoma anthem

Oklahoma group The Flaming Lips have been left stunned after their song ‘Do You Realize?’ was named the official song of their home state.

Formed by Wayne Coyne, The Flaming Lips have risen from cultish, bizarre, psychedelic oddballs to become slightly better known bizarre, psychedelic oddballs.

Last year’s film ‘Christmas On Mars’ was a case in point. Shot in singer Coyne’s back garden, it was backed by a frequently left field but always fascinating soundtrack.

Yesterday (March 2nd) the Oklahoma state legislature made the announcement following an extensive voting process. More than 400 songs were nominated, which were then whittled down to ten finalists.

In the process of winning The Flaming Lips beat off competition from Elvis Presley’s ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ and The Call’s ‘Oklahoma’.

Taken from their album ‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots’ the song has become a firm fan favourite, and a highlight of their stunning live show. This summer the American group will journey with Clash to Rock Ness, where their set will surely rank as one of the summer’s finest.

Joining Flaming Lips on the bill are The Prodigy, Basement Jaxx, Orbital and more to be announced.
