Fans have called out Ian Brown on his current solo tour.
Legendary Manchester band The Stone Roses have been placed on the back burner, with Ian Brown focussing once more on his solo activities. 2019 album ‘Ripples’ saw the frontman break cover, but it received a mixed reception, with Clash writer Felix Rowe noting: “A deeply mixed return, then, and perhaps not advisable as your first entry point to his solo work. We all know that Ian Brown can make waves; today he has chosen to make ‘Ripples’.”
Since then, Ian Brown has made several controversial anti-vax statements, using Twitter to spread beliefs that are, to be frank, disinformation. His now deleted initial post read “NO LOCKDOWN NO TESTS NO TRACKS NO MASKS NO VAX #researchanddestroy”. He went onto double down on this with a further series of tweets which again have now been deleted. Since then he’s threatened to cancel appearances at events where vaccination certificates were required including Glasgow’s TRNSMT Festival last year.
Launching a new UK tour, Brown opened in Leeds’ O2 Academy last night – September 25th – with a set that promised to focus solely on his solo catalogue. However, fans immediately spotted a problem – there was no band, only a backing tape.
The move sparked a mixture of confusion and outrage, with the show receiving heavily negative reactions on social media.
One fan described himself as “gutted” before saying “I’m a life long fan but it was bad”. Another labelled the solo performance “karaoke” while disgruntled punter Simon Fowler urged fans to sell their tickets for the tour: “talk about desecration the memory of the Stone Roses – he’s just done it [in] one evening…”
Check out some of the reactions below.
Gutted to see @ianbrown turn up to his £40 a ticket, sold out gig at leeds tonight WITH NO BAND. I’m a life long fan but it was bad. #ianbrown does karaoke and butchers his own tunes. Most were too pissed to care but I had to get out after this one. Longsight M13 was a highlight. pic.twitter.com/8owVy2NHjSSteven latham (@I_R_Mole) September 25, 2022

Anyone who has Ian Brown tickets for the tour, sell them now. Talk about desecrating the memory of the Stone Roses – he’s just done it one evening.— Simon Fowler (@sifoulerfowler) September 25, 2022
Ian Brown’s first solo tour in a decade continues tonight (September 26th) in Glasgow; he plays London’s O2 Academy Brixton on October 7th.
