James Holden has posted the video for his new track 'Renata' – watch it now.
Each track from James Holden is worth savouring. Sure, the producer has a keen awareness of the dancefloor, but each composition (it'd be shameful to label them as mere tunes) extends into its own path, evolves on its own set terms.
'Renata' is no different. Stripped from the beatsmith's upcoming album 'The Inheritors', the oscillating synths have an immediate effect, bubbling under your skin. A solid groove is established, with James Holden's mechanical funk owing as much to Delia Derbyshire as Juan Atkins.
Then it keeps going, and going and going. Twisting and turning every few moments, 'Renata' is an experiment in control – in controlling the listener and controlling the tempo, despite the myriad changes.
Will Samuel and Jack Featherstone have stepped in to provide the visuals and the results are intensely hypnotic.
