North West London talent Essence Martins has shared her debut single, ‘Pending Status’.
Inspired by the likes of Norah Jones and Lauryn Hill, and the pop-rock pedigree of Paramore and Phoebe Bridgers, Martins pivoted from a career in sport to pursue music full time. Plying her craft as an instrumentalist on Birdy’s tour, Martins emerges from the shadows with her first single, a folky, plaintive ode to non-committal love.
Of the song’s inspiration, Essence shares, “Pending Status is a song about being involved with someone who isn’t fully committed. The flame you once had for them starts to burn out and eventually, you have to move on. We shouldn’t wait around forever for someone who can’t make their mind up. It’s always better to know where you stand, even if you don’t get the answer you’re looking for. Knowing is better than not knowing...”
‘Pending Status’ is the first single to be taken from Martins’ forthcoming debut EP, due for release in early 2024.
