Erland Cooper To Release Album Planted Underground Three Years Ago

Plus, live shows also confirmed...

Erland Cooper will finally release the album he buried under the sands of Orkney three years ago.

The composer kicked off 2024 with a special broadcast on Mary Anne Hobbs’ 6Music show, and the ever-productive Scottish talent is ready to unveil something special.

Three years ago Erland Cooper took the masters for his album ‘Carve the Runes Then Be Content With Silence’ and buried them under a beach on his native Orkney. Leaving curious instructions as to where they could be found, he then left them to decay, and be at one with the elements.

Eventually uncovered by inquisitive fans, ‘Carve the Runes Then Be Content With Silence’ will be given a full release on September 20th (in line with Autumn Equinox on September 22nd).

Erland Cooper explains…

“It’s a meditation on value, process, patience and art. Any alterations to the sound and music, produced by the earth, will be reincorporated into the pages of the final score for live performance, as orchestral articulations. Then, the work is complete.”

Alongside this, Erland Cooper has confirmed plans for a full UK and European tour, including a show at London’s Barbican on June 8th, and a performance at Orkney’s prestigious St Magnus Festival on June 28th.

CLASH visited Erland Cooper just before Christmas, exploring his East London studio and discussing his methods, and future plans. Re-visit that conversation in our archive.
