Epic Records have decided to drop Death Grips from their roster.
It was never an easy relationship. Death Grips are a resolutely independent act, whose work remains stubbornly at the coal face of musical progression. Epic Records felt that they could develop the Sacramento collective, and were responsible for easing debut album 'The Money Shroud' into the waiting world.
The row over 'NO LOVE DEEP WEB' though, has seemingly soured the relationship. Death Grips posted the album online without permission, before Epic intervened and asked the band to take the material down from the net. Yesterday (November 1st) the band placed correspondence from Epic on their social networks, indicating that the label – not the band – were behind the decision to remove 'NO LOVE DEEP WEB' from the internet.
As a result, Epic have decided to drop Death Grips and released the following statement: Epic Records is a music first company that breaks new artists. That is our mission and our mandate. Unfortunately, when marketing and publicity stunts trump the actual music, we must remind ourselves of our core values.
To that end, effective immediately, we are working to dissolve our relationship with Death Grips. We wish them well.
