Emma-Jean Thackray Turns The Page With ‘Black Hole’

A fresh beginning...

Emma-Jean Thackray returns with new track ‘Black Hole’.

The composer’s journey from West Yorkshire to London, from classical education to the dancefloor, has resulted in a string of vital recordings, embracing system culture and the elasticity of jazz in the process. Taking time out to reconfigure her sound, she’s back with a new single, a fresh direction, and a new label, too.

Signed to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings / Parlophone, Emma-Jean Thackray turns the page with ‘Black Hole’. The neat vocal chant acts as a hook, while the billowing jazz improvisation heads to uncharted waters.

Surrealist comedian and Brainfeeder-signed musician Reggie Watts is on hand for a memorable feature, on a song that nods to continuing currents in Thackray’s work while also embracing the new.

She comments…

“Sometimes life feels like an inescapable black hole and you think you’re never gonna get out of there, that you’ll be floating in the abyss for ever. During those moments, for me there’s only music that can pull me out. In dark times when even puppies can’t make you break a smile, you gotta start up the space ship and make a weird-ass p-funk inspired tune. Cut some filthy drums, get out the space echo, and let the silliness of a wah-pedal lift your mood and remind you that when music is your purpose, you always have a light to walk towards.”

Tune in now.
