Emma-Jean Thackray has announced plans for new project Talking Therapy Ensemble.
The group features the jazz-leaning composer signing with some fantastic musicians, including Binker Golding on saxophone, Matt Gedrych on bass and Dougal Taylor on drums.
Emma-Jean Thackeray handles vocals, trumpet, and percussion, and her guiding force is augmented by a genuinely collaborative atmosphere on their debut EP.
Recorded at Abbey Road studios last year – part of the Abbey Road Amplify x Pitchfork London Sessions – a full 12 inch vinyl release is incoming.
Emma-Jean Thackray comments…
“When the band and I play live the music takes on new life. We use so much improvisation and there’s so much trust between us that every show is a brand new one where anything can happen. In the shows my music is a just a world that they can express themselves in – a diving board for their personalities to jump from. During our performances I’m no longer a solitary artist sat alone in a room with a piano and a pencil, but the music comes alive and I’m part of a proper band.”
The full EP is an exhilarating ride, one that touches on free-form abstraction – think Ornette Coleman, or Sun Ra's Arkestra – before pivoting towards the physicality of club culture.
