Emile Sande Topples Adele

Chart run down...

There has been a switch of places at the top of the albums chart, with Emile Sande toppling Adele.

It was the battle of the retro-soul divas. The winner of this year’s Critics Choice award at the BRITs, Scottish singer Emile Sande’s debut album was pitted against Adele’s absurdly successful full length ’21’.

In the end, Emile Sande has powered her way to the top spot. The singer dis-placed Adele at number one, with ’21’ falling back down to second place.

Now enjoying 58 weeks on the chart, Adele can afford to ignore the odd setback. The singer is currently equal with David Bowie in terms of the number of career weeks spent at Number 1 in the Official Albums Chart.

In terms of all time sales, ’21’ is now the eighth biggest selling album in the history of the UK charts. With more than four million sales under her belt, Adele is now focussed on breaking a few more records.

“This is another incredible achievement to cap a year of incredible achievements for Adele,” said the Official Charts Company’s managing director Martin Talbot. “By overtaking Bad, 21 has truly, officially cemented Adele’s place among the all-time greats. Who would bet against her improving further on that achievement, by taking steps towards the all-time Top 5?”

Elsewhere, Meat Loaf has entered the Top Five with his new album. Apparently a deeply personal affair, ‘Hell In A Hand Basket’ hit number five – one space behind Lana Del Rey’s ‘Born To Die’.

1. Emile Sande – Our Version Of Events
2. Adele – 21
3. Ed Sheeran – +
4. Lana Del Rey – Born To Die
5. Meat Loaf – Hell In A Handbasket
6. Gotye – Making Mirrors
7. Whitney Houston – The Essential
