The pair worked on 2010 studio album 'The Union'...
Leon Russell

Elton John has paid his respects to friend and collaborator Leon Russell.

The American musician was a member of famed Los Angeles' session team the Wrecking Crew, who dominated the shape and sound of 60s pop music in America.

Predominantly working behind the scenes, Leon Russell was a noted songwriter, working with The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and more, before achieving lasting fame within country music.

His star dimmed in later years, though, until Elton John recruited him for 2010's 'The Union'. The album was a hit, and helped push Leon Russell back into the limelight for a late-career renaissance.

Sadly passing away at the weekend, Leon's old sparring partner was amongst the first to pay his respects.
