Elton John has been forced to cancel a number of tour dates after contracting a serious bacterial infection.

The legend seemingly became ill on a plane returning from Chilean capital Santiago, and spent two nights in intensive care on his return.

As a result of becoming "violently ill" the songwriter has been forced to cancel his upcoming Stateside shows.

In a statement Elton's management explained that the "rare and potentially deadly" bacterial infection is being dealt with by health professionals.

"Thankfully, Elton’s medical team identified this quickly and treated it successfully," the statement explained. "He is expected to make a full and complete recovery".

Elton John added: "I am so fortunate to have the most incredible and loyal fans and apologise for disappointing them. I am extremely grateful to the medical team for their excellence in looking after me so well."

Get well soon Elton!
