Seminal American songwriter Elliott Smith is set to be the subject of a new retrospective.
With his soft, almost whisper-like voice and gently plucked guitar Elliott Smith became one of the most potent musical voices of his generation. Based in Portland, his output influenced the way countless performers approached songwriting.
Yet Smith continually struggled with depression. Elliot Smith’s battle with mental illness became the focal point of his life, with the singer often unable to tour due to his crippling sense of self-doubt.
Dying in mysterious circumstances in 2003, to this day no one is sure if Elliot Smith committed suicide or was in fact murdered. Leaving behind him a near perfect back catalogue, his work is now set to be introduced to a new wave of listeners.
Taking tracks from each of his seven studio albums, ‘An Introduction To… Elliott Smith’ will be released on November 1st.
Courtesy of Domino Records, the album is a fine starting point for fans. Intended as an introduction, the fourteen track mixes well known classics alongside some lesser heard album tracks.
A worthy overview of his career, ‘An Introduction To… Elliott Smith’ will also contain early versions of both ‘Miss Misery’ and ‘Happiness’.
