Hotly tipped British newcomer Ellie Goulding is due to release her debut album ‘Lights’ later this year.
Ellie Goulding seems to have arrived from nowhere. Obscure even by the standards of British songwriters the acoustic star has been named as the winner of the ‘Critics Choice Award’ at this year’s Brits without even a Top 40 single to her name.
A new category at the Brits the ‘Critics Choice Award’ is a barometer of new talent. The inaugural award was picked up by British singer Adele while last year’s trophy rests with Florence And The Machine.
Having released only a handful of tracks to date Ellie Goulding was a controversial choice for the award. However with her quivering voice and remarkably mature songwriting talent the singer could yet match the hype.
Putting the finishing touches to her debut album, Ellie Goulding is set to release the results on March 1st. Kept strictly under wraps ‘Lights’ is due to be hit the shops amid a barrage of hype from fans.
Set to be preceded by the single ‘Starry Eyed’ on February 22nd, Ellie Goulding explained in a statement that the album was written in a small room in London. “I spent the majority of my time recording this album in my producer Starsmith’s bedroom in Bromley” she claimed.
“”It is made up of songs that all started on a guitar over a period of about two years. A number of the songs vent romantic victories and failures.
She added: “One of the first songs I ever wrote, ‘Wish I Stayed’, is there, a song about leaving the countryside, which still pains me. The acceptance of living in London and attaining peace of mind led to tracks like ‘Starry Eyed’, because I could finally write something more fun.”
