Bury’s finest Elbow were celebrating last night (January 20th) after winning the prestigious Pop prize at the South Bank Show in London.
Elbow have, by any standards, had a phenomenal year. The group released their new album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ to great acclaim, winning over critics with its lush textures and heart-felt songwriting. Dedicated to a close friend who had died just before the band began working on it, ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ stood out amidst the trend-filled release schedule.
The band beat favourites Radiohead and Burial to the Mercury Music prize, surprising even themselves with the achievement. An emotional night, Elbow seemed overcome with the award – and also slightly tipsy.
Elbow beat Laura Marling and Estelle last night to scoop the prize. In a spectacular night for the group they were also nominated for three Brit awards, namechecked in Best British Group, Best British Live Act and Best British Album.
The Brit Awards take place on February 18th.
