Elbow Win Mercury Music Award

For 'The Seldom Seen Kid'

Just announced as the winner of Nationwide Mercury Music Award 2008 is Elbow for their album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’, bagging themselves the twenty thousand pound prize.

Before the announcement the favourites were Burial, Radiohead and Elbow, who saw bookies close the book on them after a flurry of high stake bets were placed.

‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ is the band’s fourth album and is named for their friend Bryan Glancy who passed away in 2006. Frontman Guy Garvey said in his acceptance speech that the win was the best thing to ever happen to the band and dedicated the award to Glancy.

Up for the award this year were Adele, British Sea Power, Burial, Elbow, Estelle, Laura Marling, Neon Neon, Portico Quartet, Rachel Unthank & The Winterset, Radiohead, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss and The Last Shadow Puppets.
