Elbow Talk Awards

Bury group add to collection

Bury’s finest Elbow have been discussing the importance of awards, as they add yet another gong to their rapidly expanding collection.

Elbow’s last album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ has thrust the band into the spotlight. A glorious collection of anthems, it demonstrated Guy Garvey’s outstanding songwriting ability.

Since its release last year the album has scooped the Mercury Music Prize, while the band themselves have won a South Bank Prize and a Brit Award.

Last night (February 26th) Elbow won an NME award, gaining the trophy for ‘Outstanding Contribution To British Music’. Speaking backstage at the ceremony Guy Garvey revealed he was astonished by the change in fortunes for the band.

“We got over the fact we wouldn’t be at awards ceremonies a long time ago, we were happily bobbling along, so it’s amazing it’s happened,” he told NME.

“None of us could have predicted what’s happened this year. There was a point where we thought this album could have been our last one… I’m not sure why it’s connected with so many people with the way it did, but we’re all over the moon that it did.”

Elbow are currently working on their new album on the Scottish island of Mull.
