Earl Sweatshirt's father, South African poet Keorapetse Kgositsile, has died.
The writer earned enormous acclaim in his homeland, helping to define South African writing for a post-Apartheid era.
A former South African poet laureate, Keorapetse Kgositsile is also Earl Sweatshirt's father, although the two seemed to be estranged.
Speaking to the New Yorker in 2011, Kgositsile revealed that Earl hadn't shared any of his music with him.
“When he feels that he’s got something to share with me, he’ll do that,” he said. “And until then I will not impose myself on him just because the world talks of him.”
South African news agency broke the news of Keorapetse Kgositsile's passing, who is believed to have died early yesterday morning (January 3rd).
He was 79 years old.
