Dum Dum Girls Talk DIY Method

Shoegaze types speak to ClashMusic

Hotly tipped Brooklyn newcomers Dum Dum Girls have spoken about their love of DIY methods.

Dum Dum Girls are part of a new wave of groups coming out of the United States who take their cue from late 80s indie pop and shoegaze. Mixing melody with feedback, the group are unusual in that they are all female.

Yet this has never been an issue. Dum Dum Girls seem to have arrived fully formed, with their femininity an act of life rather than a marketing angle.

With their debut album on the horizon, ClashMusic spoke to singer Dee Dee who enthused about the band’s DIY approach. “I love the fact that bands are able to do a lot more on their own nowadays,” she explained.

“I think it’s really great how music has become more accessible and you don’t have to be a huge fucking talent to record a song: people can use their computers or really simple equipment.”

Formed as a solo venture, Dum Dum Girls only expanded into a fully fledged band to bring Dee Dee’s songs to life. Performing their first show at CMJ, it seems that the forced marriage has been a happy one.

“We’re all really good friends and the other girls have friendships independent of me now too, which is cool because they all only met for the first time in October when we played CMJ,” she says.

“I recorded everything myself, including the album, so it was just a case of me just teaching them the songs.”
