Dua Lipa has gained Albanian citizenship in a ceremony at Tirana city hall.
The singer was born in London to a family of Kosovan Albanians, and has always been proud of her roots. In 2016 Dua – together with her father – co-founded the Sunny Hill Foundation, hosting annual concert in Kosovo to raise funds for people experiencing financial difficulties.
Now Dua Lipa has been given Albanian citizenship. The ceremony took place at Tirana city hall, and was backed by President Bajram Begaj. The move comes ahead of Albania’s 110th anniversary of independence from the Ottoman empire, with Begaj praising Dua’s role in making Albanians famous across the globe.
“I will be an Albanian with papers too,” Dua Lipa said before taking her oath. “It is an indescribable great joy with such acceptance, love and everything,” she added.
Dua Lipa will play Tirana’s main Skanderbeg Square today – November 28th – as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
It’s been another busy year for the singer, who completed a full UK arena tour in Spring. Since then, the latest season of her hugely successful At Your Service podcast has gone live, with guests including Monica Lewinsky.
