Jakwob is giving away a new mixtape which features contributions from Kano, Ghostpoet and more.

Stirring from the underground with his eyes on the mainstream, Jakwob is part of a new wave of bass producers who are capable of really breaking out.

Often a divisive figure, the producer’s latest mixtape ‘The Prize’ contains some high profile guests. Mercury nominated rapper Ghostpoet adds some rhymes, with Kano, Mr Hudson and more lending a hand.

‘Turn To Stone’
“A minimal, ambient track, ‘Turn To Stone’ features fairly unusual vocals which sound like an old slave/prison song but is just the genius of Gerrard O’Connel. With a hip-hop and post-dub feel about it, it is an insight into my super-minimal style.”

‘Slaves’ ft. 14th
“The first time i ever heard the 14th i was completely blown away by Tracey’s voice and Tom’s production. The whole vibe they have going on is really cool. We immediately scheduled a session. I built an instrumental around a Russian slave chant. It was really haunting and i felt that Tracey’s voice would be perfect on it. The track to me is somewhere between Morcheeba, Zero 7 and 90’s garage. It’s one of my favourite tracks on the tape. It originally stemmed from a much slower instrumental with a slightly more interesting arrangement.”

‘Sailing’ ft. Roses Gabor
“I’ve seen Roses Gabor perform many times with some of my favourite artists. She’s got a great writing ethic and has such a great taste in music. It’s one of the more old school and traditional productions I’ve done using simple synth sounds. It all stemmed from a Rajisthanian sample which you can softly hear fading in and out in the background, all complemented by Roses sultry yet chilling vocal.”

‘Stay’
“Rocky and I have been writing together for a good two years now and this track definitely has the essence of our minimalistic writing style. It’s a song that is best listened to on headphones at night.”

‘Island’ ft. Ghostpoet
“Ghostpoet is without a doubt the most incredible lyricist I’ve worked with so far. Me, Rocky and GP have had some wonderful sessions and seem to really relate musically and conceptually. In retrospect this song is really conceptual and is all about the general vibe and melodies. The track is about tribespeople – whether modern or ancient – discovering a new land that could be potentially good or bad for them.”

‘Please’ ft. Kano
“Kano just gets it. We seemed to gravitate towards the same sounds and have a very similar studio ethic. He’s totally up for creating something that would break the mould, and in the least arrogant way, i think that this track really does that by being fairly chilled but having a thick sub with his demonic verses. Both of us feel that we can’t find a track that shares this combination. Make sure you listen to it on the biggest speakers you own.”

‘Erupt’ ft. Youngman
“‘Erupt’ is a fairly epic track. I’d understand if you think the bass stabs are overwhelming, but listen to it on a big system and I challenge you to say it doesn’t affect you. Youngman is an incredibly talented young man – expect to hear some great future-pop from him in the near future!”

‘Let It Fall’
“‘Let It Fall’ was written by Rocky Nti and is a reference to both youth violence and a relationship. It’s a hard-hitting track and one we love to perform in the live show. The bassline reminds me of something from Star Wars – what do you reckon?”

‘Feeling The Desire’
“‘Feeling The Desire’ is based on a sample I found on an old school rave record. It’s just one of those beats from my hard drive that I thought you lot should hear. Keeping it pretty old school with some dub step beats and dance stabs. It’s got an iccle bit of everything.”

‘The Prize’ ft. Mr Hudson
“Lots of people have been marrying basslines and female vocals. I think that Mr Hudson sounds amazing on this – his voice is undeniably brilliant and distinctive. He soulfully talks about a fairly dramatic incident in his life and yet keeps it energetic and hooky. I love the contrast between shimmery tremor strings and the weighty bass. I love how cinematic it is.”
