Pete Doherty has revealed that he nearly quit Babyshambles after a show in Scotland went disastrously wrong.
Formed in the aftermath of the Libertines untimely split, Babyshambles have gone on to become a well respected outfit in their own right. However the group’s career could have been cut short after a messy affair in Dundee.
In a new interview Doherty claims he came close to pulling the plug on the band after a fan gave him an agonising wedgie. Yes, a wedgie, the sort of thing Screech had done to him in Saved By The Bell.
“The gig was going great, so I thought, ‘I’ll dive in’, and this big Scotsman just grabbed hold of my pants and said, ‘Cop a load of this, Doherty’.”
“Those were his exact words.”
The singer told the Daily Record that his bandmates found him inconsolable on the bus. “I hid in the tour bus crying. When they found me I was crying my eyes out, going, ‘The band’s not working out. We should split up’.”
“Nobody believed what was wrong, and eventually I snapped, ‘Alright, I got a wedgie, ok?'”.
Strangely enough, this was probably also the same show that The View grabbed a support slot for, placing their first foot on the ladder to success.
Pete Doherty is set to release his first solo album ‘Grace/Wastelands’ on March 16th.
