DJ Alfredo Has Died

A Balearic legend…

DJ Alfredo has died.

Renowned as one of the most important DJs in the lineage of European culture, his death was confirmed overnight in a statement from Amnesia, a club he helped develop into a powerhouse. It reads:

“Thank you for the nights and beats we shared together. Your music and vision shaped the sound of Balearic Beat and the soul of Amnesia. So many memories were made through your energy, your legacy will live on our dancefloor forever. You will never be forgotten.”

DJ Alfredo suffered a stroke in 2011, and went through health complications in the past few years.

Emerging in the mid 80s, DJ Alfredo essentially developed the blueprint for the sound that would be termed Balearic, matching early house, post-disco, yacht rock and even the odd U2 record in the process. Many of his picks would define the island’s palette, while formative experiences on the island alongside the likes of Danny Rampling would prove to be an imperious influence on London acid house clubs such as Shoom.

An Argentinian born wanderer, DJ Alfredo was revered across the club culture spectrum. Amongst those paying tribute  Sister Bliss of the English dance group Faithless, who said: “Safe to say he changed the world of music for the better.”
