Distance Tackles ‘Dubstep Allstars’

New mix confirmed

Distance is set to curate the latest instalment in Tempa’s Dubster Allstars mix series.

Dubstep is in a strange position. The larger the bass style gets, the more prominence is receives and if one thing kills any underground scene its the taint of the media.

Built as an underground scene, dubstep grew from a handful of clubs in London. DJ turned producer Distance has been there from the beginning, pushing the sound forward and soaking up new ideas.

A lynch pin of Rinse FM, Distance has been invited to curate the latest volume in the ‘Dubstep Allstars’ mix series. Now up to volume eight, the London DJ has managed to get his hands on some unreleased cuts.

Preparing the new mix, Distance called in some favours. Benga donates ‘Chemical Compound’ a ferocious reminder that the London kid is still capable of rinsing the soundsystems despite his commercial success.

Elsewhere, Cyrus and Tunnidge appear while a collaboration with Pinch under their Deleted Scenes guise is also included. Overall, the compilation seems close to the true, 140 BPM ideal of dubstep as opposed to its new-found eclecticism.

“People need to appreciate that a DJ is a ‘selector’ too, because it’s easy to pick a dozen crowd pleasers and bang them together, but it’s something else to select carefully and make the sequence and mixing turn them into something else, a mix that draws you in” explains Distance ahead of the mix.

One of the most respected mix series in dubstep, the Dubstep Allstars mix is always a valuable cross section of the bass scene as it expands ever outwards.

‘Dubstep Allstars 8 – Distance’ will be released on July 25th.
