‘Smile’ is from their ‘Eros’ sessions…
Deftones with Chi Cheng

April 13th marked a year since the death of founding Deftones member Chi Cheng (pictured above, second from right). The bassist had been in a coma-like state since a car accident in November 2008.

To mark the anniversary of his passing, the Californian outfit’s frontman Chino Moreno – most recently heard fronting the band Crosses – has posted a previously unheard track that Cheng worked on. ‘Smile’, which you can hear below, dates from Deftones’ sessions for the album ‘Eros’. It would have been their sixth studio LP, but has been on hold ever since Cheng’s accident.

Between then and now, Deftones have released two mighty fine albums – ‘Diamond Eyes’ (2010) and ‘Koi No Yokan’ (2012) – with ex-Quicksand man Sergio Vega on bass duties, but they maintain that ‘Eros’ will someday see the light of day. So perhaps ‘Smile’ is the first song of more to come. We’re certainly keen to hear more from the band’s album that never was.
