Chi Cheng, bassist with legendary Californian metal act Deftones, has been left in a coma after being involved in a car crash on Monday (November 3rd).
At the moment details on the accident and on the specifics of Cheng’s condition are scarce, but Deftones’ singer Chino Moreno confirmed the news in an interview online.
“I don’t know everything that’s going on — I just know it’s very serious,” Moreno said. “I’m on my way to be with his family, I’m pretty freaked out about it.”
Chi Cheng is a founder member of the group, and has played a huge part in their success. Deftones are one of the few metal groups who have been given credit by the mainstream, with 2000’s breakthrough album selling over 1 million copies in the US. The group’s use of turntables, their incorporation of influences from the hardcore and psychedelic scenes, have all marked Deftones out as a hugely innovative act.
As well as an acclaimed musician Chi Cheng is an accomplished poet, releasing a spoken word collection ‘The Bamboo Parachute’ in 2000.
