Beau Velasco, drummer with American dance-punks The Death Set, has died according to a statement from the band.
The Death Set were originally formed in Australia by Johnny Siera and Beau Velasco, but quickly moved to the United States to find more acceptance for their abrasive and unclassifiable sound.
Live, the band blend hardcore punk with electronic samples in order to create a dizzying blend of influences. The Death Set gained wider acceptance through their stunning live show, with the band setting up in the middle of the audience.
Signed to Counter Recordings The Death Set released their debut album last year, but the future of the group is now uncertain following the announcement that drummer and founder member Beau Velasco has died.
A statement from the band confirmed the news, with Velasco passing away in New York on Sunday (September 27th).
“R.I.P. my dear brother, friend and band mate Beau Velasco. We are all so devastated that I will keep this short. We love you and you will be missed. You affected us all so much in the most positive ways. Our lives would not be as is if not for you. We love you. For all those who wish to pay their respects we will let the details be known soon.”
It is not known how the death of Velasco will affect The Death Set. A statement on the band’s site recently claimed that: “The original core lineup (including Velasco) of the band had recently rejoined to write and record the next record and to resume touring together.”
