Death Cab For Cutie On New Album

Ben Gibbard "so proud" of new material

Death Cab For Cutie singer Ben Gibbard has spoken about the band’s upcoming album.

It’s a strange time for indie rock in the United States. Bands previously accustomed to lingering on the sidelines have broken through to the mainstream, resulting in some surprise success stories.

Last year Owl City enjoyed enormous success with what was effectively a Postal Service re-write. Based in the studio at the time, Ben Gibbard must have been wondering what was happening to the world.

Working with main project Death Cab For Cutie, the songwriter was crafting material for the band’s seventh studio album. Due for release next year, the album is apparently a step away from old material.

“It’s not a guitar-based record,” he told Spin. “We’ve been into vintage keyboards and playing with that palette. We’re not adding guitars because people will be expecting them…I’m so proud of this album that at this point I don’t care if people don’t like it.”

Now one of the biggest rock acts in the United States, it’s highly unlikely that no one will like the album. However fans should expect something a little more mature from Death Cab For Cutie.

“We’re all moving into a period in our lives where family is very important,” Gibbard explained. “So living off in the woods for a month away from family isn’t something we want to do.”

“On this record I’ve written a couple songs in our downtime between studios and we start recording that brand new song on the first day of the next session, which is something we’ve never really had the opportunity to do before.”

Death Cab For Cutie are due to release their new album next summer.
