Death Cab For Cutie have shared their take on Low’s ‘The Plan’.
The track is a salute from one American institution to another, with Death Cab For Cutie and Low having been intertwined for more than a decade. Touring together in 2012, they’ve kept in touch, and singer Ben Gibbard mourned the loss of Low’s Mimi Parker last year.
Set to release ‘Asphalt Meadows (Acoustic)’ on March 10th, Death Cab For Cutie have also taken time out to cover a Low classic. Retaining the glacial shimmer of the original, Ben Gibbard’s touchingly affecting vocal acts both as an evocative of the lyric and an outlet for grief.
Beautifully spartan, ‘The Plan’ is a frosted, piano-led paean to friendship. Ben Gibbard shares…
I first saw Low in 1994 opening for Sunny Day Real Estate at the OK Hotel in Seattle. Since then, they’ve been one of the most influential and important bands of my life. It was the fulfillment of my teenage self’s indie rock dream when our bands became friends while on tour together in 2012.
We were incredibly saddened by Mimi’s passing this past November. She was an incredible artist and an even better human being.
We believe the best way to remember the musicians we lose is to play their songs. ‘The Plan’ has always been one of our favourite Low songs and is presented here in tribute to Mimi.
For their part, Low were overwhelmed by the gesture. Alan Sparhawk writes on Twitter: “We have received so much love and kindness from fans, friends, and fellow artists – most are too precious and private to broadcast, but some are and should be shared and shouted from the rooftops. Thank you DCFC and thank you all for being here.”
