The duo craft hopelessly dreamy pop music, with their shoegaue-adjacent textures putting you in mind of everyone from Cocteau Twins through to Asobi Seksu. Recently supporting Slowdive on their UK tour, the group have paused to share their new self-titled EP.
Out now on Sonic Cathedral, it’s a wonderful six-track affair, refulgent in its beauty and ambitious in its scope. Available digitally and on limited edition 12 inch vinyl, deary have also constructed a CD version with five bonus tracks and remixes.
The songwriting on the EP emerged during their formative sessions together, the sound of two musicians truly jelling. As bewitching as the melodies here undoubtedly are, there’s also an other-worldly element, a hugely enriching sense of atmosphere.
“Obviously, the influence of the likes of Cocteau Twins and Slowdive are hard to ignore,” admits guitarist and producer Ben Easton. “They were the real cornerstones of why we got together in the first place. But I have always been a huge fan of the production on Interpol’s ‘Turn On The Bright Lights’, Portishead’s ‘Dummy’ and Saint Etienne’s ‘Foxbase Alpha’. They were all on repeat when I was mixing the EP and I think that comes across too.”
