De La Soul members Dave Jolicoeur and Kelvin Mercer are working on a new project titled First Serve.
De La Soul are big names round these parts. The band’s daisy age period was represented in our recent article on the Golden Age of Hip Hop, while on a more recent tip the group’s Nike running mix was a re-energised return.
Now two members of De La Soul are to launch a side project (via Pitchfork). Dave Jolicoeur and Kelvin Mercer are banding together to launch First Serve, using the nicknames Jacob ‘Pop Life’ Barrow and Deen Whittier – or Plug 1 and Plug 2 – respectively.
The First Serve project focusses on a Tumblr which contains a confusing array of potential influence and animated Gifs. Currently working on their debut album, First Serve are offering fans a new mixtape which contains some unexpected cuts.
Streaming now on SoundCloud, the blurb for the mixtape states: “First Serve is the brainchild of 2 & 4 (aka Chokolate & Khalid, producers/ DJ’s). After an instant meeting of minds they decided to embark on a musical adventure – a Hip Hop album played by musicians. All they needed was a couple of MC’s to help complete their vision. Enter NY based Jacob ‘Pop’ Life and Deen ‘D’ Whitter.Listen to the mixtape recorded at the party. It’s funky, it’s hip hop, it’s disco… and it’s a classic!”
