One of the true mavericks of American music Daniel Johnston is set to re-issue several of his early albums.
Daniel Johnston is an artist whose struggle with mental illness sadly often precedes his music. A diagnosed schizophrenic, the songwriter needed constant care for some time and now lives in a house beside his parents.
However despite his illness Daniel Johnston has managed to forge a reputation as a stark and emotionally honest songwriter. Though he is limited due to extremely basic recording techniques, Johnston’s wry humour and melancholic streak often shine through.
Continually writing and recording, Johnston eventually found himself the centre of attention. Kurt Cobain was a noted fan, and the Nirvana singer’s ‘Hi, How Are You?’ t-shirt has gone on to become a hipster classic.
Now Daniel Johnston is set to re-visit his past with a series of re-issues. ‘Yip Jump Music’ has been digitally remastered and comes with several new tracks, while companion piece ‘Continued Story and Hi, How Are You’ are a selection from his legendary cassette releases.
In addition to this the singer is set to release ‘Welcome To My World’. Almost a ‘Best Of’ it collects some of Daniel Johnston’s best known songs, and is a perfect introduction to his very raw talent.
With more re-issues due later in the year, it has also been confirmed that Daniel Johnston’s life is to be made into a movie biopic. Now set to gain the recognition he deserves, Daniel Johnston has also unveiled a major UK tour.
Daniel Johnston is set to re-issue his albums ‘Welcome To My World’, ‘Yip Jump Music’ and ‘Continued Story and Hi, How Are You?’ on August 31st.
