Maverick Baltimore producer Dan Deacon have posted a new message to fans in which he lays to rest a number of rumours surrounding an old video he made.
Dan Deacon began life making music for fun, surrounded by electrical equipment in his bedroom. Releasing his finished tracks in small batches, the producer grew to have the reputation of a local oddball.
2007’s ‘Spiderman Of The Rings’ changed all that. Deacon’s first complete album, it was completely different to anything being made in the United States – or anywhere else for that matter.
Completely other-worldly it marked the arrival of a truly distinctive songwriting voice. Dan Deacon followed this with a full scale tour, before beginning work on this year’s mind bending album ‘Bromst’.
However it seems that Dan Deacon can’t escape his past. A video from 2006 featuring the track ‘Drinking Out Of Cups’ has become extremely popular on the internet, gaining a total of nearly three million hits.
Comedian Sarah Silverman posted it on her Twitter account, along with the message “Dan Deacon trips on acid” as the web community seems to be taking Dan Deacon to their heart.
As a result, Dan Deacon has been forced to post a new bulletin, in which he discusses his feelings about the video. Edited version below…

there is an amazing amount of disinformation and completely wrong information about this piece and i just want to clear some things up.
in 2002 i recorded myself watching television with the sound off doing a character that was meant to embody long island culture (where i grew up). i was NOT on acid when i made this piece. i have NEVER DONE ACID.
while i have no problem with psychedelics and think that they are important to human culture, i do want it to be known that i was not on any psychedelics or any drugs while making this piece. it was all stream of conscience, reacting to watching the tv, changing the channels, with the sound of, talking to it as if it were a person communicating back to me.
i guess i should just be glad so many people enjoy it. however, to have it be stated that i was on acid time and time again takes away from any of the creative process i put into the piece. i’m not sure i’m getting my point across but i am tired of writing this and need to get back to work on whartscape. love you all.
