Damon Albarn has revealed that he has begun work on a new album under his own name.
Damon Albarn likes to keep busy. So far in 2012 the songwriter has already turned his opera ‘Dr Dee’ into a studio album, before assisting in the production of Bobby Womack’s new LP ‘The Bravest Man In The Universe’.
Set to lead a reformed Blur through a one off concert this summer, Damon Albarn has a lot on his plate. Now the songwriter has unveiled plans for a brand new album, seemingly under his own name.
Chatting on Radio 4’s Front Row programme, NME have helpfully transcribed large sections of the interview. “This week we’re mucking around with these Russian synthesizers in a very loose mind of doing some kind of record under my name” he said.
“I suppose you could call it a solo record, but I don’t like that word. It sounds very lonely – solo. I don’t really want to be solo in my life. But yeah, I’m making another record.”
Elsewhere, Damon Albarn mused on the Blur re-union. Set to play Hyde Park this summer, the show is part of the cultural Olympiad designed to tie in with the Olympics.
Probed about the event, Albarn said the games were “too corporate” before revealing the band’s true inspiration. “The corporate side I find a bit depressing. There’s too much of it (sponsorship). A lot of people see it differently. We’re putting on another celebration for the official closure of the Olympic Games.”
Albarn continued: “But we’re putting it on for London and people who hopefully want to sing their hearts out in a park. I’m signed up to the idea of regeneration in London and putting on a good account of ourselves; definitely.”
The one off show has fuelled speculation that Blur could record another album. Asked about the possibility of a permanent re-union, Damon Albarn was typically elusive. “I’m seeing it as a punctuation point. That can be whatever you choose to make it.”
